Germany: Unionized rail workers plan to conduct nationwide strike from Jan. 8

Unionized rail workers plan to strike across Germany from Jan. 8. Widespread train disruptions possible.

Informational

Railway workers affiliated with the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) plan to strike nationwide from Jan. 8 to demand improved wages and reduced working hours. In mid-December unionized workers voted for indefinite strikes, however, as of Jan. 2 negotiations are ongoing between employers and unions. Union leaders have stated that if the strike goes ahead, it will likely be for a maximum of five days.

Unless averted through negotiations, widespread rail transport disruptions are highly likely during the strike period. Vehicular transport disruptions are possible due to increased car usage. Protests are possible at transport hubs. Heightened security may accompany any protests that materialize.

Reconfirm all rail travel. Consider taking alternative transport methods if booked to travel by train during the strike period. Allow additional time for vehicular transport. Avoid all areas that are subject to related protest activity. Heed instructions from authorities.

A previous GDL strike on Nov. 15-16 resulted in 20 percent of scheduled services operating. A further strike Dec. 7-8 also caused significant network disruptions.
