Greece: Activists plan to strike, demonstrate nationwide, especially Athens and Thessaloniki, Feb. 1

Activists plan to strike, protest across Greece Feb. 1. Main events planned in Athens and Thessaloniki. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Student activists affiliated with the Greek Federation of Secondary Education State School Teachers (OLME) plan to protest and strike across Greece on Feb. 1. The purpose of the actions is to denounce a government proposal to establish private universities. OLME announced that the strike would commence from 11:00 until the end of the day. Organizers have only announced two specific protest sites and times; however, the OLME called on supporters to demonstrate across the country. The following planned demonstrations were announced:

  • Athens: Propylaea from 12:00

  • Thessaloniki: Arch of Galerius and Rotunda (Kamara) from 12:00

The planned gatherings are the latest in a series of protests that began in December. Similar rallies of varying sizes are also possible in cities elsewhere around the country. It remains unclear how many participants the demonstrations may draw; however, a related Jan. 11 protest in Athens reportedly had 800 attendees and ended in clashes with police.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstrations in Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as any other protests that take shape. Additional student demonstrations, as well as picket protests by educators associated with OLME, are likely in urban centers nationwide. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out, particularly at the Athens and Thessaloniki demonstrations, as they will likely draw the most participants. Protest marches that disrupt roadways may occur.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
