Greece: Activists to protest and march in central Athens Jan. 20
Activists to protest, march from Merkouri Square in Athens, Greece, at 12:00 Jan. 20 to mark 11th anniversary of killing of migrant worker.
Activists plan to hold a protest march in central Athens during the afternoon of Jan. 20. The purpose of the demonstration is to mark the anniversary of the 2013 killing of a migrant worker. Participants will depart from Merkouri Square at 12:00. Although organizers have not released details of the march route or destination, demonstrators will likely proceed to 60 Trion Ierarchon Street, the site of the killing. It is unclear how many participants may attend or how long the demonstration will last.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the march route. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the vicinity of Merkouri Square and 60 Trion Ierarchon Street as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in Athens' Petralona neighborhood during the afternoon of Jan. 20. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
