Haiti: Civil activists call for nationwide general strike Jan. 29-31

Civil activist group calls for general strike across Haiti Jan. 29-31 over insecurity. Localized business and transport disruptions likely.

Warning

The Anti-Corruption Union Brigade (Brigade Syndicale Anti-Corruption, BSAC) civil activist group has called for a nationwide general strike Jan. 29-31. The action aims to denounce the government's alleged failure to address the threat of criminal gangs and deterioration of the human rights in the country. Organizers have encouraged all sectors to participate.

The strike will probably result in business and transport disruptions nationwide. School closures are likely. While the group has yet to confirm protest plans, related gatherings may occur at government buildings and other popular protest venues, especially in Port-au-Prince. Demonstrations may also involve roadblocks on primary roads. Officials will likely deploy security forces to monitor protests but generally lack the capabilities to manage and/or monitor all gatherings. Clashes involving police, protesters, and gangs are possible, particularly in Port-au-Prince.

Exercise extreme caution if operating in Haiti, especially in Port-au-Prince. Avoid any demonstrations due to possible clashes. If unruly gatherings materialize, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to drive through protest roadblocks. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Confirm all business appointments and transport reservations in advance. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
