Iraq: Air traffic suspended at Erbil International Airport after explosions reported in Erbil late Jan. 15
Explosions reported in Erbil, Iraq, late Jan. 15, after which Iran claims responsibility for ballistic missile attacks; air traffic halted.
Explosions reportedly occurred in Erbil late Jan. 15, after which Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for ballistic missile attacks targeting "spy headquarters and the gathering of anti-Iranian terrorist groups in the region." Unconfirmed reports indicate that the apparent attacks involved drones and missiles and targeted the US Consulate and Erbil International Airport (EBL). Authorities have suspended air traffic at EBL following the explosions. No casualties were immediately reported.
Flight disruptions are likely at EBL over the coming hours. Increased security is likely in Erbil, including in the vicinity of the US Consulate, as authorities investigate and respond to the apparent attacks. Additional attacks are possible in Erbil over the short term.
Avoid impacted areas until authorities give the all-clear, and confirm flight reservations if scheduled to travel via EBL. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. If incoming artillery fire is reported in the general vicinity, stay indoors and away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your country's diplomatic mission.
The explosions in Erbil come amid near-daily drone and rocket attacks against US military camps in Iraq and Syria by Shi'a militias.
