Authorities are responding to an explosion at the Taketoyo thermal power station in Aichi Prefecture's Taketoyo the afternoon of Jan. 31. Initial accounts suggest the explosion took place around 15:00, causing fires in at least three buildings in the affected compound and heavy smoke in the vicinity. There are no immediate reports of casualties, or of the fires spreading to other compounds. Officials have not clarified the cause of the incident.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely to continue in the coming hours. Electricity outages are possible if power generation at the site faces prolonged disruptions. Businesses in the vicinity may close as a precaution or due to official orders.

The incident site is approximately 40 km (25 miles) southeast of Nagoya.

Allow additional time to reach destinations in the affected area through at least the afternoon of July 30.
