Lebanon: Unionized public workers in Lebanon launched nationwide general strike Jan 30-Feb. 9

Unionized public workers called for a nationwide general strike in Lebanon Jan. 30-Feb. 9; associated protests likely.

Informational

The Public Administration Employees Association called for a general and comprehensive strike across Lebanon from Jan. 30-Feb. 9. The purpose of the labor action is to demand better salaries and benefits for public administration employees. Organizers have announced related protests will occur in front of public administrations for the duration of the action. Administrations in the Tyre and Zahle districts and the North Lebanon and Akkar governorates have confirmed that unionized public workers will join the action.

Disruptions to business operations are likely, particularly if the labor action is prolonged or receives support in other governorates. If protests materialize, localized transport disruptions are possible near demonstrations in urban centers, especially if protesters march along or block roads. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Liaise with trusted contacts regarding protest sites. Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for localized clashes or other security incidents. Do not attempt to pass through protesters' roadblocks; wait for authorities to remove them. Be alert for residual debris and sharp objects if driving on previously blocked roads. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Reconfirm business appointments.
