Unplanned water outages underway in George Town and Seberang Perai in Penang, Malaysia, as of Jan. 24. Commercial disruptions possible.
Water supply outages are affecting parts of George Town and Seberang Perai in Penang as of Jan. 24. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) attributed the unplanned disruptions to repair works following a major leak on an underwater pipeline section in Sungai Perai, Butterworth. The affected areas include parts of Northeast, Southwest, Central Sebarang Perai, and South Sebarang Perai districts. More than 200,000 customers are experiencing water outages or low water pressure. Officials are unable to provide a clear timeline for the resumption of services in the impacted areas but expect the disruptions to last several days.
Authorities are deploying water tankers to the affected areas. Some business disruptions are possible, especially for companies that rely heavily on municipal water to maintain operations.
Stock up on drinking water. Confirm alternative water supplies for business operations. Pressure and water quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the outage. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes.
