Mayotte: Protest ongoing across Mayotte Jan. 31, including Mamoudzou
Protesters gather in Mamoudzou, Mayotte, Jan. 31. Road blockages ongoing in other areas. Increased security and disruptions likely.
Protests are ongoing across Mayotte Jan. 31 to demand the removal of a migrant camp and stricter measures to prevent illegal immigration. Demonstrators gathered outside of the immigration office in Mamoudzou before marching to the barge, preventing passengers from the platform. Barge service between Mamoudzou and Dzaoudzi is suspended due to the protest. Roadblocks are also reportedly ongoing in Tsingoni, Chironguie, and Chiconi, preventing delivery services and access to medical care.
Heightened security and business and transportation disruptions are likely near protest sites. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible, particularly if authorities attempt to disperse the crowd.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
