Authorities are responding to an explosion in the Mamund Tehsil area of Bajaur District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the morning of Jan. 8. The blast, which occurred near a police vehicle, has killed at least five people and injured 22 others. Casualty numbers could increase over the coming hours. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Authorities have cordoned off the impacted area and will likely maintain a heightened security posture as a precaution. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are probable. Additional explosions are possible.
Bajaur is located approximately 67 km (41 miles) north of Peshawar.
