Sri Lanka: Protests planned at the Public Utility Commission and Ceylon Electricity Board headquarters in Colombo Jan. 22
Activists plan to protest at the Public Utility Commission and Ceylon Electricity Board headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Jan. 22.
Unionized workers plan to protest outside the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) headquarters in Colombo 12:00 Jan. 22 to denounce the suspension of a group of CEB employees. Separately, activists will also gather outside the Public Utility Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) building to call for a power tariff reduction; organizers did not specify a start time for the action. Up to a few hundred people may attend each gathering.
Security personnel will probably monitor the protests and may attempt to disperse the gatherings if they becomes overly disruptive. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if demonstrators march on or block nearby roadways. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Do not attempt to navigate roadblocks; wait for the police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans, as organizers may change details at short notice. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
