A bombing attack against a bus killed eight soldiers and civilians and wounded at least 13 others in a desert area to the south of Palmyra in Syria's Homs Governorate on Jan. 9. Authorities have yet to provide further details about the attack. No group has as yet claimed responsibility; however, Islamic State (IS) likely carried out the attack, as its militants have regularly targeted military and civilian buses in the region.
Increased security is likely in the affected area as authorities investigate the incident. Localized transport disruptions are possible into the morning of Jan. 10. Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out.
