Australia: ASEAN-Australia Special Summit to take place in Melbourne March 4-6

ASEAN-Australia Special Summit to take place in Melbourne, Australia, March 4-6. Increased security likely, protests planned.

Informational

The ASEAN-Australia Special Summit will take place in Melbourne March 4-6. Foreign leaders and delegations from 10 countries are expected to attend the summit. Related events will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). The summit is very likely to conclude without incident; however, localized disruptions are possible due to increased security measures.

There are currently no known security threats to the event. Nevertheless, an elevated police presence is likely at key locations, including areas surrounding MCEC and transport hubs. Officers could erect checkpoints and impose temporary roadblocks, particularly around the meeting venue. Security screening delays are likely at the entrances of hotels hosting summit participants, which will likely be located in the CBD. Minor flight delays could occur at Melbourne Airport (MEL) as senior summit delegates arrive and depart the city.

Demonstrations over various issues are likely in the run-up to and during the event. Anakbayan Melbourne, a Philippine youth group, has called for the following protests in Melbourne to denounce President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who will be attending related summit events:

  • Feb. 29: Philippine Consulate 18:00

  • March 4: Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) 16:00 and Melbourne Town Hall 18:00

  • March 5-6: Organizers plan to hold impromptu protests but have yet to specify locations and gathering times

Security personnel will almost certainly prevent protesters from gathering near the main event venue. Gatherings will likely pass peacefully, but minor clashes are possible if a demonstration occurs. Any sizeable rallies will likely prompt localized traffic disruptions.

Plan for heightened security near MCEC, related hotels, and transport hubs. Consider diverting around venues as a precaution. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution. Police cordons may result in localized traffic disruptions; be prepared for minor traffic detours. Monitor local media for updated information about the summit schedule and road conditions.
