Australia: Network Aviation and QantasLink pilots announced extension of strike across Western Australia until Feb. 19 /update 3
Strike extended by Network Aviation and QantasLink pilots in Western Australia, Australia, until Feb. 19. Reconfirm flights.
Pilots from the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) have announced plans to extend strike across Western Australia until Feb. 19; the action, which starts Feb. 14, was initially scheduled to end Feb. 16. The strike follows failed wage negotiations with Qantas (QF) management. While officials from Network Aviation (NWK) announced plans to charter alternative aircraft during this period of work stoppage, the strike will likely affect NWK flights, mainly specializing in emergency freight, mining, and private charter services, and scheduled flights operated on behalf of QantasLink (QLK) out of Perth Airport (PER) to destinations throughout Western Australia. A related strike Feb. 8 resulted in the cancellation of at least 35 return flights from regional towns and mine sites. Organizers may cancel the planned action at short notice if negotiations with Qantas Group management succeed; further strike extensions are possible in the coming weeks if their demands are not met.
Flight disruptions can last several hours after the strike ends as airlines reposition aircraft and clear passenger backlogs. Strike-related protests are possible, mainly near airports, airline offices, and public squares. Dozens of people may attend each event. Authorities could deploy increased security near any rallies that may materialize. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible at related gatherings.
Confirm flight status and reservations during the labor action period. Do not check out of accommodations or leave for the airport until onward travel is confirmed. Avoid all protests as a precaution.
