Belarus: Adverse winter weather forecast nationwide through at least Feb. 9

Adverse winter weather forecast across Belarus through at least Feb. 9. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Warning

Adverse winter weather is forecast across much of Belarus through at least Feb. 9. As of Feb. 6, the Belarus Department of Hydrometeorology has issued an orange (the middle level on a three-tier scale) severe weather warning for heavy snowfall in northeastern parts of the country through early Feb. 7 and for strong winds in western parts of the country overnight Feb. 6-7 and across much of the rest of the country Feb. 7. Further mixed wintry precipitation, moderate winds, and icy conditions are expected across much of Belarus Feb. 8-9. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are probable along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are likely, including on secondary and rural roadways in affected areas, as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are probable due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports. Power outages are possible in affected areas.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged electricity outages.
