Bolivia: Unionized transport workers stage protests and block roads across La Paz Feb. 7

Unionized transport workers protest and block roads in La Paz, Bolivia, Feb. 7, causing traffic disruptions; heightened security likely.

Warning

Transport workers affiliated with the Urban Federation of Intercity Drivers of Our Lady of La Paz (Federacion Urbana de Choferes Interciudad de Nuestra Senora de La Paz) are protesting and blocking roads across La Paz on Feb. 7. The purpose of the actions is to denounce municipal public transport regulations. Protest organizers have said that participants would continue to block roads in the city until at least 14:00; however, they have threatened to block the city's streets for an additional 24-hour period if local government officials do not agree to meet and discuss their demands. The blockades have reportedly caused traffic disruptions in some areas of the city.

Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence to protest sites. Lingering traffic disruptions are likely, especially in the event that protest organizers launch additional demonstrations and blockades. Business disruptions are possible in areas that are subject to protest activity. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters to reopen blocked routes.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; instead, wait for authorities to dismantle them or seek alternative routes. Allow for additional transport time throughout La Paz. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
