Bulgaria: Protest marches in central Sofia, Feb. 17

Far-right groups and counter-protesters plan separate marches in central Sofia, Bulgaria, Feb. 17. Heightened security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Far-right groups will hold the annual Lukov March from 14:00 Feb. 17 in Sofia. Participants will meet at the National Palace of Culture and march to Trakai Street. The march commemorates a pro-Nazi WWII general, and is scheduled to end at 17:00. Local authorities predict that about 1,000 people will participate in the event.

In parallel, counter-protesters will gather at Lake Ariana from 13:00. Participants will then march to the Banya Bashi Mosque. Authorities predict that around 200 people will take part.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration sites and march routes. Minor confrontations between participants of the two events, and with law enforcement officers, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
