Tight security likely as Indian Prime Minister addresses rallies in West Bengal, India, on March 1, 2, and 6. Disruptions possible.

Warning

Authorities will likely deploy tight security in parts of West Bengal as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the state to address several political gatherings during early March. The visits come ahead of India's 2024 General Election, with prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members likely attending the planned events. The gatherings could draw large numbers of participants. As of Feb. 29, organizers have announce the following specific rallies:

  • March 1: Rally in Arambagh, Hooghly district

  • March 2: Rally in Krishnanagar, Nadia district

  • March 6: Public gathering at Kachari Maidan in Barasat, North 24 Parganas District

Related gatherings could occur at other locations across West Bengal, including near stadiums, along prominent thoroughfares or in public squares, and at universities. Protests by the state's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party cannot be ruled out.

Heightened security measures may include vehicular and pedestrian checks, as well as movement restrictions near event venues. Associated transport and business disruptions are likely.

Exercise caution in the affected areas. Confirm business appointments, road statuses, and transport reservations March 1-6. Avoid any related demonstrations that may materialize. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for travel delays and business disruptions in areas that Modi visits. Carry proper identification documents to present at any security check points. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
