India: Tipra Motha Party to stage indefinite blockade on National Highway 8 and related protest campaign in Tripura State from Feb. 28

Tipra Motha Party to blockade National Highway 8 and stage protest campaign in Tripura, India, from Feb. 28; transport disruptions likely.

Warning

The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), Tripura's main opposition party, is planning to stage an indefinite road blockade on National Highway 8 and a related protest campaign in the state from Feb. 28. The purpose of the actions is to denounce the central government's alleged delays in implementing constitutional reforms concerning the local indigenous population. National Highway 8 is an important route that connects several population centers in Tripura State.

Although protest organizers did not immediately specify further details regarding the planned actions, participants could gather at prominent government buildings, public squares, or on other thoroughfares in addition to National Highway 8. If well attended, related gatherings will probably draw thousands of participants. Demonstrators could temporarily suspend, postpone, or cancel the planned protest activity on short notice.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such gatherings and could use force to disperse unruly crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between supporters of opposing political groups, cannot be ruled out. Transport disruptions are highly likely. Business disruptions are possible if protesters blockade National Highway 8 for a prolonged period.

Avoid all protests and refrain from navigating around any roadblocks due to potential violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm deliveries, road status, and transport reservations from Feb. 28. Consider making alternative arrangements for urgent travel and shipping. Allow additional travel time near protest sites. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
