Indonesian Women's Coalition activists to stage demonstration near Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Indonesia, Feb. 9; increased security likely.

Informational

Activists affiliated with the Indonesian Women's Coalition are planning to stage a demonstration at Aspiration Park (Taman Aspirasi), across from Merdeka Palace, in Jakarta from 10:00 Feb. 9. The purpose of the protest is to denounce alleged abuses of power by President Joko Widodo in elections. The demonstration comes ahead of the country's general election scheduled Feb. 14. The number of people who may participate in the rally was not immediately clear.

Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence to the area to monitor the demonstration. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if protest participants attempt to block roads. Violence is unlikely during the demonstration; however, clashes between activists and police are possible if security personnel attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering.

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
