Mayotte: Protesters gather in Mamoudzou Feb. 6 amid heightened security /update 1
Protesters gather in Mamoudzou, Mayotte, Feb. 6, blocking roads amid heightened security. Further demonstrations and disruptions likely.
Demonstrators are gathering in mulitple areas of Mamoudzou Feb. 6 to denounce insecurity and illegal immigration. Protesters initially rallied outside the Place de la Republique before marching to the High Court in the Kaweni area. Security forces used tear gas to prevent crowds from entering the High Court and clashes broke out around 13:20 after stones were thrown at police officers. On RN1, protesters also reportedly threw stones at police officers while blocking traffic.
Heightened security and business and transportation disruptions are likely near protest sites. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible, particularly if authorities attempt to disperse the crowd. Further protests and roadblocks are possible over the coming days.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
Protesters have erected roadblocks across Mayotte since late January to demand the government take action against insecurity and illegal immigration.
