North Korea: Pyongyang reportedly launches multiple cruise missiles late morning of Feb. 2

North Korea launches cruise missiles westward into Yellow Sea, Feb. 2. No reports of damage or casualties.

Informational

South Korean officials said North Korea launched multiple cruise missiles into the Yellow Sea from its west coast at around 11:00 Feb. 2. The number, flight paths, and distances of the projectiles remain unclear. There were no immediate reports of damage, casualties, or transport disruptions following the launch. Additional projectile launches are possible over the coming days.

The latest cruise missile launch marks the fourth such instance in this year. North Korea has consistently increased the frequency of projetile launches and missile tests in recent years, with additional missile launches possible in the coming weeks.

Despite attempts at jumpstarting diplomacy, the geopolitical dynamics on the Korean Peninsula remain largely unaltered, as North Korea has previously stated that it will only give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for concrete moves to reduce perceived US threats against it. North Korean leaders have previously warned of more decisive actions in response to US sanctions. However, both sides will likely avoid any actions that could escalate into a full-scale conflict.
