Increased security measures are likely in Wapenamanda District, Enga Province, as of Feb. 19 following fatal tribal clashes in the area. Reports indicate that fighting between the Ambulin and Sikin tribes, along with their allies, occurred in the Akom area during the early hours of Feb. 18. The clashes have killed at least 64 people; casualty numbers will likely increase over the coming days.
Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to the area; however, law enforcement agencies remain generally under-resourced and are unable to respond effectively. Additional communal clashes remain possible in the area over the coming days. Security personnel will probably increase patrols in the area and erect roadblocks in areas where clashes occur. Violence between local communities and police is possible; security forces may resort to force to break up violent groups. Businesses in the affected area could close due to the security environment or halt operations at the first sign of unrest. Flight disruptions are possible at Wapenamanda Airport (WBM) if clashes occur nearby.
Wapenamanda is around 38 km (24 miles) northwest of Mount Hagen, Western Highlands Province.
Consider avoiding nonessential travel to the impacted area until tensions subside. Check with local contacts on the status of roads before driving in the town and surrounding areas; use alternative routes to avoid likely areas for clashes and allow additional time to reach destinations. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter, or remain inside away from windows if indoors. Follow all security personnel instructions.
