Paraguay: Unionized farmers plan protests in several cities nationwide Feb. 20

Unionized farmers to protest across Paraguay Feb. 20. Heightened security and disruptions likely.

Warning

Members of the National Farming Federation (Federacion Nacional Campesina, FNC) have called for protests across Paraguay on Feb. 20 to denounce a lack of government support for small production and agriculture. Protests are planned in several cities, including Asuncion, San Pedro, Caaguazu, Canindeyu, Caazapa, Misiones, Concepcion, Itapua, Paraguari, and Guaira. Unannounced protests are possible in other urban centers.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely through at least Feb. 20. Although the action should remain largely peaceful, clashes between authorities and protesters cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to disperse gatherings forcibly.

Avoid all protests. Confirm appointments in advance and plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in Asuncion or other cities in Paraguay. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
