Portugal: Farmers protesting on highways near Elvas Feb. 1

Farmers demonstrating on highways near Elvas, Portugal, Feb. 1; road travel, border crossing, and business disruptions likely.

Local farmers have gathered to protest on the outskirts of Elvas, near the Portuguese border with Spain on Feb. 1 to denounce EU agricultural policy. Hundreds of farmers have used agricultural vehicles to blockade the A6, N4, N372, and N373 roads near Elvas and the A6 highway to the east of Elvas, where it crosses the border into Spain near Badajoz.

Authorities on both sides of the border have deployed security personnel to monitor the demonstrations. Localized disruptions, including to road travel and cross-border freight, are likely until the end of the demonstration. Violence is not expected.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow for extra travel time if traveling near the affected area. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
