Thailand: Political activists plan to stage demonstrations in Bangkok Feb. 18

Political activist group to protest in Bangkok, Thailand, 17:00 Feb. 18. Increased security likely; transport disruptions, clashes possible.

Warning

The political activist group Thalugaz plans to stage a demonstration at the Victory Monument, Bangkok, from 17:00 Feb. 18. Participants will demonstrate support for political detainees in Thailand. Participation in the event remains unclear, though could be considerable as the event coincides with the release on parole of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from a police hospital earlier in the day.

Authorities will likely bolster security at the protest site. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if activists occupy nearby roads. Clashes between demonstrators and security personnel are possible, particularly if participants attempt to bypass security barriers or defy orders to disperse. Mass arrests could occur if protesters become overly disruptive or security forces determine demonstrators violate any public gathering permit requirements.

Avoid the protest sites due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Plan for possible localized transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories
