UK: Unionized transport workers strike in Northern Ireland, Feb. 1

Unionized workers employed by Translink, the primary public transport provider in Northern Ireland, are observing strike action across the region on Feb. 1. The strike has been organized as unions push for a pay increase pegged to the cost of living. Significant bus and rail disruptions have been reported as around 25,000 public transport workers observe the industrial action.

Lingering public transport disruptions could extend into early Feb. 2. Increased demand for alternative forms of public transport, including taxis, is likely. Increased traffic congestion is also likely as more commuters opt to use private vehicles. Picket protests may form near rail and bus transit hubs, as well as in central Belfast.
