UK: Uyghur rights activists to demonstrate in London Feb. 5

Uyghur rights activists to demonstrate at Chinese Embassy in London, UK, 18:00-19:00 Feb. 5. Heightened security likely; scuffles possible.

Informational

Uyghur rights activists plan to demonstrate at the Chinese Embassy on Portland Place in London 18:00-19:00 Feb. 5. The purpose of the action is to commemorate the deaths of Uyghur demonstrators in Yining (Ghulja), China, in clashes with police in 1997. The number of people that may participate in the demonstration was not immediately clear.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely and may linger for several hours after the rally's planned end time. Scuffles between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or bystanders cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Chinese Embassy Feb. 5. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
