Australia: Climate activists to continue ongoing protest campaign in Melbourne's Central Business District through March 16
Extinction Rebellion to continue ongoing protest activity in Central Business District of Melbourne, Australia, through March 16.
The Extinction Rebellion (XR) will continue its ongoing protest campaign in Melbourne's Central Business District through March 16. As part of their action, activists plan to cause disruptive actions to raise awareness of climate change issues. As of early March 14, activists will hold a daily protest march along Collins Street starting at 07:00. On March 13, dozens of participants caused disruptions to vehicular traffic and tram services; officials advised motorists to use alternative roadways. Additional demonstrations of varying types are highly probable over the coming days. Prominent rally sites include government buildings and public facilities such as libraries, public squares, and thoroughfares.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence near such gatherings and could impose enhanced security restrictions, including road blockades, depending on operational needs. Officials could conduct mass arrests if protesters defy official orders and/or continue causing disruptive actions; in recent days, the government temporarily detained some activists. Isolated clashes between police and demonstrators are possible. Localized transport disruptions are highly likely to continue. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for potential localized transport and business disruptions, particularly near Collins Street, through March 16. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
