Haiti: Airlines suspend flights to/from Port-au-Prince as of March 2 /update 1
American Airlines and Sunrise Airways continue suspension of all flights to/from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as of March 2. Confirm flights.
As of March 2, American Airlines (AA) has suspended flights between Miami International (MIA) and Port-au-Prince's Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) until further notice. The airline has joined Sunrise Airways (S6), which suspended flights to/from PAP as of Feb. 29. The measure is in response to a recent surge in gang violence affecting Port-au-Prince, including gunfire reportedly striking aircraft on the tarmac at PAP. The carriers have given no indication as to when normal service may resume; residual flight disruptions are possible for several days after American Airlines and Sunrise Airways lift their suspensions. As of March 1, the US Government reiterated its advice for US citizens not to travel to Haiti.
Other airlines could take similar measures should the surge in violence continue. Flights may be delayed, canceled, or otherwise rescheduled with little to no advance notice. Disruptions to road routes leading to and from the airport may also be increasingly impacted.
Reconfirm or reschedule flight reservations if booked to travel via PAP through at least March 10. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Allow additional time to travel to the airport. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. Consider booking alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
