Jordan: Lingering increased security likely in Amman after police fire tear gas to disperse protesters marching toward Israeli Embassy late March 24

Police forcibly disperse protesters marching toward Israeli Embassy in Amman, Jordan, late March 24; lingering heightened security likely.

Warning

Lingering heightened security measures are likely in Amman after police fired tear gas to forcibly disperse hundreds of protesters marching toward the Israeli Embassy in the capital late March 24. The reported purpose of the demonstration was to denounce Israeli military actions in Gaza and the rising civilian death toll in the territory amid the Israel-Hamas war. Officials reportedly closed streets in the vicinity of the embassy and, before breaking up the protest near the diplomatic facility, deployed security forces to disperse demonstrators gathering at the nearby Al-Kalooti Mosque who had intended to march toward it. During the demonstration, some protesters attempted to break through a security cordon in place around the embassy; police beat and arrested several of them.

Residual transport and business disruptions will probably affect any locations near the embassy that are subject to heightened security measures. Similar demonstrations and clashes between protesters and security forces may materialize in Amman over the short term.

Avoid the vicinity of the Israeli Embassy until the situation normalizes and security forces vacate the scene. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any residual disruptions. If operating in Amman and violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the location and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials and your home government.
