Martinique: Protests related to arrest of social activist possible across the territory March 15-17

Disruptive protests possible throughout Martinique March 15-17. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.

Warning

Continued protests against the recent arrest of activist Herve Pinto are possible March 15-17, with any demonstrations that materialize likely to be accompanied by violence. While protests could occur throughout the territory, they are especially likely in Fort-de-France, where demonstrators earlier gathered at the Hotel de la Collectivite Territoriale, which serves as the headquarters of the territorial government, and the Palais de Justice, which is the island's main court.

In the earlier protests, demonstrators set fires, blocked streets, attempted to enter the government buildings, and clashed with police; protesters may engage in similar actions throughout the March 15-17 weekend.

A heightened security presence will likely continue over the coming days, with police likely to attempt to forcibly disperse any protests by firing tear gas. Associated transport and business disruptions are probable.

Avoid all related protests as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Allow additional time for journeys in affected areas. Strictly follow all official directives. Leave the area at the first sign of unrest.
