Sri Lanka: Further student protests likely in Colombo through late March

Further student protests likely in Colombo, Sri Lanka, through late March. Disruptions, clashes possible. Avoid protests.

Warning

Further protests by the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) are likely in Colombo through late March. Participants are demanding educational reforms and improved infrastructure. On March 6, authorities deployed water cannons to disperse a related protest at Borella Junction and arrested an IUSF leader. Activists have called for a protest in Colombo from 12:00 March 7 to demand the release of their leader but have yet to specify a location for the event.

Popular demonstration venues include De Soysa/Liberty Circus intersections, Fort Railway Station, Galle Face Green, key government buildings, universities, public squares, and major roadways. Hundreds of people may join related gatherings. Skirmishes and mass arrests cannot be ruled out if activists breach security restrictions. Security personnel typically monitor protests; roadblocks and security cordons are possible near prominent government buildings.

Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially in case of a large turnout. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Security forces have previously used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrations. Protests may turn violent quickly, with activists committing arson or vandalism. Authorities may restrict public movement and telecommunication services, and security officers may resort to the use of live ammunition if significant violence erupts.

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Do not attempt to navigate roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans as organizers may change details at short notice. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
