Activists to stage gatherings during former PM Thaksin's visit in Chiang Mai, Thailand, through March 16. Increased security likely.

Informational

Activists plan to stage rallies in Chiang Mai city as the former PM Thaksin Shinawatra visits several sites in Chiang Mai Province, through March 16. The political figure has announced the following planned stops:

March 15:

  • Kruba Srivichai monument, Chiang Mai

  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, Chiang Mai

  • Khao Soi Samerjai restaurant, Chiang Mai

  • Warorot Market, Chiang Mai

  • Cemetary in Mae On District

  • Wat Rongtham Samakkhi in San Kamphaeng District

March 16:

  • Cafe de Oasis, Chiang Mai

  • Chiang Mai Night Safari

  • Lum Dee Te Khua Dang restaurant, Chiang Mai

  • Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)

The following actions are confirmed during Thaksin's visit:

  • Activists associated with the Red Shirts movement - who are generally sympathetic to Thaksin - will stage a demonstration from 09:00 March 15 on Huay Kaew Road in front of Chiang Mai University to express grievances over the imprisonment of fellow activists.

  • Supporters of Thaksin are also planning gatherings to express solidarity with the politician; organizers have confirmed a rally at Wat Rongtham Samakkhi in San Kamphaeng District on March 15.

Additional gatherings are likely; potential sites include planned stops on and along the politician's transport route. Dozens to hundreds of activists could join each rally.

Authorities will likely deploy additional personnel at planned stops. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, especially if protesters block or march along roads. Although violence is unlikely, isolated skirmishes are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering.

Avoid the rallies as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites; remain cooperative if stopped by officials for security checks. Do not navigate roadblocks as a safety precaution. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
