Brazil: Unionized bus workers will continue to strike indefinitely in Sao Luis as of April 26 /update 1

Unionized bus workers will continue to strike indefinitely in Sao Luis, Maranhao State, Brazil, as of April 26. Disruptions reported.

Warning

As of early April 26, bus workers affiliated with the Union of Road Transport Workers in the State of Maranhao (Sindicato dos Trabalhadores em Transportes Rodoviarios no Estado do Maranhao, STTREMA) in the Sao Luis Metropolitan Area plan to continue to strike indefinitely. The labor action is likely to continue for several days as no negotiation talks have begun as of April 26. The bus strike is affecting around 150,000 public transport users in the areas of Paco do Lumiar, Raposa, and Sao Jose de Ribamar. The workers are demanding the payment of overdue salaries.

Related protests are possible, though none have been confirmed as yet. In addition to the direct impact on public transport in Sao Luis, the walkout is likely to result in increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis, app-based ride-sharing, and metro services.

Reconfirm public transportation schedules if operating in the Sao Luis Metropolitan Area for the duration of the strike. Allow extra time to reach destinations. Avoid any possible protests. Heed instructions from authorities.
