Canada: Mixture of rain and freezing rain forecast across parts of central Ontario through April 29

Severe weather forecast across parts of central Ontario, Canada, April 29. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.

Warning

A low-pressure system is forecast to bring a mixture of rain and freezing rain across parts of central Ontario April 29. Dangerous ice accumulations are likely in areas where freezing rain falls and flooding is possible during periods of sustained heavy rainfall. As of early April 29, Environment Canada has issued red freezing rain warnings across central parts of the affected area and special weather statements for freezing rain in northern parts and for heavy rain in southern parts. Officials may update and extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming hours and days.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or ice accumulations impact utility networks.

The severe weather could contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to slippery roads caused by ice accumulations. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities may temporarily close low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters or other routes that become too hazardous due to ice.

Severe weather could cause flight delays and cancellations at airports across the affected region. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track inundation.

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected area. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
