Ecuador: Power shortages due to shortage of hydroelectric generation likely to continue nationwide as of late April 18
Low hydroelectric generation disrupting power supply in Ecuador as of late April 18. Business disruptions almost certain.
A shortage of hydroelectricity generation due to low rainfall is causing power disruptions throughout Ecuador, except Guayaquil and Cuenca, as of late April 18. President Noboa has ordered public and private institutions to suspend work April 19 to conserve electricity. Reports indicate that rolling load shedding measures have caused some customers to be without electricity for up to six hours a day. Officials have not specified when regular electricity production will be restored, but hydroelectric power will likely depend on rainfall.
Load shedding will almost certainly impact business operations. Blackouts could also disrupt certain essential services such as municipal water distribution, ATMs, and fueling stations. Traffic disruptions are possible due to malfunctioning traffic signals.
Heed the directives of authorities, including on the suspension of business activities. Reschedule appointments. Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for ground transport delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving in recently impacted areas. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working once power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary.
