France: Unionized port workers to conduct nationwide strike April 8

Unionized port workers to strike across France, launch indefinite work-to-rule strike on April 8. Port service disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized port workers affiliated with the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) union plan to strike across France on April 8. The purpose of the labor action is to denounce an alleged lack of progress in negotiations related to pension reforms. Participants will engage in a work-to-rule strike from April 8; it was not immediately clear how long the work-to-rule strike would last. The latest walkout follows a related February 7 strike that saw wide participation.

Port transport disruptions are particularly likely on April 8 and may continue for the duration of the work-to-rule strike. Picket protests are possible near port facilities; heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that take shape. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm all maritime travel and shipping scheduled for April 8 and the following days. Consider alternatives to maritime shipping and travel during this time period. Avoid demonstration areas as a standard precaution. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
