Magnitude-6.0 offshore earthquake occurs in Cenderawasih Bay, Indonesia, at around 09:02 April 9. No initial reports of damage or injuries.

Warning

A magnitude-6.0 offshore earthquake occurred in the Cenderawasih Bay off West Papua Province at around 09:02 April 9. The epicenter was about 35 km (22 miles) east-southeast of Ransiki. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 9 km (6 miles), and strong to moderate shaking was probably felt near the epicenter in far eastern West Papua Province, with light shaking likely across the rest of West Papua, eastern Southwest Papua, and far northwestern Central Papua provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
