A magnitude-5.9 earthquake occurred in Iwate Prefecture at around 04:24 April 2. The epicenter was approximately 8 km (5 miles) southwest of Kuji. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 73 km (45 miles), and weak-to-moderate shaking was probably felt in parts of southern Hokkaido and northern Honshu.
