Papua New Guinea: Increased security likely in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, as of April 1 following violence

Tight security measures likely in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea, as of April 1 following violence. Exercise caution.

Warning

Heightened security measures are likely in Goroka town, Eastern Highlands Province, as of April 1 due to recent violence in the area. Clashes reportedly broke out between drunk individuals at Hoffman Club and subsequently spread to other areas, including Goroka Main Market. Social media reports indicate that one person was injured in the incident. Authorities are conducting search operations to apprehend the perpetrators.

Officials will likely deploy additional security personnel to the area; however, law enforcement agencies remain generally under-resourced and cannot respond effectively. Additional communal clashes remain possible in the area over the coming days. Security personnel will probably increase patrols in the area and erect roadblocks in areas where clashes occur. Violence between local communities and police is possible; security forces may resort to force to break up violent groups. Officials have temporarily closed multiple businesses due to the violence; prolonged commercial disruptions are likely if additional clashes break out. Flight disruptions are possible at Goroka Airport (GKA) if clashes occur nearby.

Consider avoiding nonessential travel to the impacted area until tensions subside. Check with local contacts on the status of roads before driving in the town and surrounding areas; use alternative routes to avoid likely areas for clashes and allow additional time to reach destinations. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter, or remain inside away from windows if indoors. Follow all security personnel instructions.
