PNG: Adverse weather prompts authorities to temporarily close Mutzing section of Okuk Main Highway in Morobe Province April 15

Authorities have reportedly closed the Mutzing section of the Okuk Main Highway (also known as National Highway) due to flooding April 15. Authorities have engaged emergency services to clear the debris and divert the flood impacting the road, and advised commuters to avoid the route until further notice.

Traffic disruptions will likely affect Markham District and the cities of Mutzing and Lae, within Morobe Province, over the coming days. Heightened security and localized commercial disruptions are also likely. Authorities will probably maintain a presence along the affected areas until the highway reopens to traffic. Reports indicate the closure has affected the flow of goods and services, including fuel and essential items, and commuters traveling in and out of Lae are stranded on both sides of the highway. Officials warned that other sections of the highway, including the Nadzab-Henganofi section could also be damaged should the adverse weather continue.
