PNG: Power outage ongoing in parts of Highlands Region as of April 1

Power outage ongoing in parts of Highlands Region, Papua New Guinea, as of April 1. Commercial and telecommunications disruptions likely.

Informational

Power outages are ongoing in parts of the Highlands Region as of April 1. The outages have been affecting Mount Hagen, Western Highlands Province; Jiwaka Province; and Kundiawa, Simbu Province, since March 29 following the deliberate burning of a power pole by local landowners and a landslip amid heavy rainfall. Electricity provider Power PNG stated that it is working to restore power but did not specify a timeframe for repairs.

The outage will likely prompt business and telecommunications disruptions across Lae until officials restore power. Residual disruptions are possible after electricity supplies resume. Businesses without backup generators could suspend operations. Transport disruptions are probable in areas with malfunctioning traffic signals. The power outage could result in temporarily unavailable essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. The blackout could also adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during the outage.

Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by the power outage. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices when necessary. Monitor local news sources for further developments.
