Somalia: Emergency crews responding to structure fire in central Mogadishu the morning of April 5

Crews responding to fire in Bakaara market in Mogadishu, Somalia, the morning of April 5. Localized business, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Emergency crews are responding to a large fire at Bakaara Market in Mogadishu as of the morning of April 5. The cause of the blaze is unclear; there have been no immediate reports of casualties. This is the second such event within the last month, following a fire possibly caused by a bomb attack March 10.

Increased security and localized business and transport disruptions are likely in the affected area over the coming hours. Health complications from incidental fumes are possible. Authorities could evacuate other buildings in the area as a precaution. Lingering disruptions are possible after crews extinguish the fire as investigations and recovery operations continue.

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Heed any evacuation orders. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Consider remaining indoors if smoke is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
