Armenia, Georgia: Disruptions due to flooding along the shared Georgia-Armenia border as of May 26

Bagratashen-Sadakhlo crossing point and railway at the Armenia-Georgia border temporarily closed due to severe weather and flooding, May 26.

Warning

As of May 26, severe weather and flooding have caused disruptions across northern Armenia and between Armenia and Georgia.

  • Authorities have temporarily suspended traffic at the Bagratashen-Sadakhlo border crossing point at the Armenia-Georgia border.

  • Road and railway services are disrupted in northern Armenia. The M6 Vanadzor-Bagratashen highway was recently closed, but authorities report that the M3 and M1 highways continue to operate.

  • Floods in Lori and Tavush regions in northern Armenia have caused severe damage to local infrastructure, prompting the evacuation of over 230 people from several villages in the region. At least one reportedly died due to the flood.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger further flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil. Disruptive weather and flooding could impact power supply and telecommunications.

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions. Avoid the impacted area at the Armenia-Georgia border crossing point Bagratashen-Sadakhlo. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of electricity outages.
