Georgia: Violence reported in Heroes' Square area of Tbilisi amid protest activity early May 3
Protest activity and violence reported in Heroes' Square area of Tbilisi, Georgia, early May 3; significant transport disruptions likely.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence around Heroes' Square in Tbilisi over the coming hours following reports of violence amid protest activity in the area early May 3. Unconfirmed reports indicate that a group of up to 15 unidentified individuals attacked activists in the vicinity of Heroes' Square who were protesting the proposed "foreign agents' law," injuring at least five demonstrators. Further attacks targeting protesters cannot be ruled out over the short term.
Earlier, on May 2, police fired tear gas at protesters and arrested several who were obstructing traffic on a road leading to Heroes' Square. Long lines of vehicles formed amid a protest-related traffic jam in the area. Protesters also gathered near the Parliament building in the capital on May 2, and demonstrators remained in the area as of early May 3.
Significant transport disruptions will likely continue to affect areas of Tbilisi that are subject to protest activity, including the vicinities of Heroes' Square and the Parliament building. Localized business disruptions are also likely to affect such areas. Additional clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all protest activity as a standard precaution. Exercise caution and allow additional time if traveling near government buildings or Heroes' Square. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
