India: Ongoing water supply shortages likely to continue in New Delhi through at least mid-June

Water supply shortages likely to persist in New Delhi, India, through at least mid-June. Commercial disruptions possible.

Informational

Water supply shortages will likely continue in New Delhi until at least mid-June due to a severe heatwave. The most severely affected areas include the northern and southwestern districts, such as Chhatarpur and Mehrauli.

As of May 29, the government has implemented several related measures to curb wastage. Officials have introduced an indefinite rationing system, where water will be distributed to select southern areas once daily. Primary impacted regions include Chittaranjan Park, Greater Kailash, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, and Panchsheel Park.

Additionally, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), a utility provider, has announced penalties for water wastage. Infractions such as using hoses for car washing, overflowing water tanks, and utilizing domestic water for construction or commercial purposes will incur fines. To enforce these measures, the DJB will dispatch 200 teams throughout the city to monitor and curb water wastage.

Officials could implement further related measures and expand such restrictions to encompass additional regions if the ongoing water shortages persist. Commercial disruptions are possible over the coming weeks, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water for operations.

Stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations if operating in the affected areas. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Pressure and water quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the outage.
