A shootout between Mexican security forces and members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (Cartel del Jalisco Nueva Generacion, CJNG) drug trafficking organization (DTO) near La Laguneta, Michoacan State, May 9 killed 10 suspected criminals. Mexican security forces, including police and armed forces personnel, were deployed to the area after reports of armed clashes between members of two rival criminal organizations. Reports indicate that a group of CJNG members opened fire at a patrol as it was passing; government forces returned fire and killed the DTO members.

La Laguneta is approximately 69 km (43 miles) west-northwest of Uruapan.

Michoacan is heavily affected by DTO activity. Armed conflicts between rival DTOs, including the CJNG, New Michoacan Family (Nueva Familia Michoacan), and Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (Cartel de Santa Rosa de Lima, CSRL), occur frequently.
