Magnitude-5.9 earthquake occurs in East New Britain Province, PNG, at 09:45 May 2. No initial reports of damage or casualties.

Warning

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake occurred in western East New Britain Province at around 09:45 May 2. The epicenter was about 101 km (63 miles) east-southeast of Kimbe. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 31 km (19 miles), and moderate shaking was probably felt near the epicenter near the border between East New Britain and West New Britain provinces, with light shaking likely felt over the rest of East New Britain and West New Britain provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
