Tunisia: National Bar Association members to launch nationwide strike May 13 with related protest in Tunis May 16

National Bar Association plans to launch strike nationwide in Tunisia May 13 with protest May 16; court services disruptions likely.

Warning

The National Bar Association in Tunisia plans to stage a nationwide campaign of protest actions May 13-16 in response to authorities' May 11 arrest of lawyer Sonia Dahmani. The action will begin with a general strike by attorneys on May 13. Over May 14-16, participating lawyers will boycott hearings held by public prosecutors' offices and public safety agencies. The series of actions will culminate is what the Association has described as a "national day of rage" on May 16, with demonstrations planned outside the Tunis Palace of Justice and possibly courthouses elsewhere across the country.

The labor action will almost certainly result in reduced availability of court services. Increased security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are possible near any protests that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Reconfirm any business appointments with the courts, public prosecutors' offices, and public safety agencies slated through at least May 16. Avoid any strike-related demonstrations that may take place. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest areas until the situation is resolved.

Dahmani is a prominent lawyer who has been a vocal critic of the government and its policies. Reports indicate that, on May 11, masked police raided the headquarters of the National Bar Association in Tunis where Dahmani had sought refuge and arrested her. Dahmani's arrest follows a pattern of detentions targeting journalists, lawyers, and political leaders who have been critical of President Kai Saied and his administration.
